Brač island is the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea. Because of its culture, long history, architecture, and beautiful nature, Brač is one of the most popular islands in Croatia. The tallest peak of the island is called Vidova Gora which is also the highest island point of the Adriatic.
The main town of Brač island is Supetar, which is also the island's largest town. Supetar was named after Saint Peter and in the town center is placed St. Peter church. The church was restored in 1773 and was extended in1887. Inside it are the paintings by the local artist and a Baroque altarpiece by an unknown artist. Even nowadays, the mass is being held inside of it. Supetar has its own harbor which is the main connection with other islands, the city of Split, and the rest of the Croatian coast.
Vidova Gora is located on the south part of the island Brač. Its altitude is 778 meters. It is possible to hike or drive to Vidova Gora. On the top of it is placed a monumental cross that's twelve meters high. From Vidova Gora you have a magnificent view of the Hvar island, Bol, and the beautiful beach Zlatni rat. Zlatni rat beach is the most popular beach on the whole island. Its specific shape, white sand, and crystal clear water are just some of the things that attract visitors, especially in the summertime.
One of the things that Brač island is the most popular for is its white stone. The white stone from Brač was popular since ancient times. Nowadays, stone excavation is most popular near the town of Pučišća. The parts of Diocletian's Palace in Split were built with white stone, just like some other ancient Roman churches and palaces in Dalmatia and even worldwide. Vestibule of the United Nations building in New York and some parts of the White House in Washington were also built with Brač's stone. Products like souvenirs, sculptures, vases, clocks, etc., are being made with this stone.
These days, most of the income of Brač is coming from tourism, but agriculture, fishing, and livestock breeding are also important. Because of the good soil, a lot of locals have their own vineyards and olive trees and, later, are making their own olive oil and wine that is popular worldwide. Fishing is also beloved by the locals because of the different kinds of fish that are living in the blue sea around the island. Because of everything mentioned, there are a lot of nice restaurants all around the island with delicious food and great drinks.
To visit this beautiful island you can book yourself a local ferry, or do not waste any time, get the boat transfer from Split airport and enjoy all the wonders of the Brač island in no time!
