Welcome to the volcanic Croatian island, also known as fisherman's paradise. The Island of Jabuka, which in literal translation means an Apple Island. Apple is about 70 km west-northwest of Komiža on Vis, and it is the second island of eruptive origin, along the island of Brusnik. As there is magnetite in its black volcanic rock, as soon as the ship approaches the island, the magnetic needle of the compass goes "wild" and kinda becomes useless. However, ships are very rare in these waters because the island is far from all sea routes and off waterways, so it is visited only by those for whom it is the purpose and reason for travel.
Jabuka is almost not an island, as there is no shore suitable for docking or a bay that would be safe from the wind, the steep slope does not allow the construction of any housing, the sea around is 260m deep with almost no anchoring. The rocks are smooth and without natural protrusions for which the boat could be moored.
Jabuka is actually steep, in some places vertical, 97 meters high pyramid-shaped gorge, bare, rough, and almost completely inaccessible except in a small area on the southwest side, but only for calm seas, which is not very common here. As it is located in the zone of the deepest sea, lonely and away from other islands and canals, Jabuka is exposed to all winds, and even the weakest winds raise big waves on the open sea, so as you can already guess it takes a lot of knowledge and luck to land here.
Rarely visited, the sea around the island is rich in fish, and the harshness of its climate is tolerated by only two endemic species: the black lizard and a plant species called "rabbit".
The surrounding sea is rich in fish, especially the toothfish also known as the "emperor o 'rib". The area around Jabuka, known as Jabučka kotlina is a natural hatchery for fish and other species: hake, shrimp, white muskrat, squid, monkfish, etc. It used to be often visited by the local fishermen because as they said, around Jabuka you can catch the most tasteful lunch in minutes.
The island of Jabuka has been a famous falcon hunting ground throughout history. According to old records, the hunt was conducted in the fall, more precisely in September. According to the history the Frenchman Castela says in 1603 there was a house at the foot of the island where catchers stayed while touring their nests on the cliffs. He points out that climbing Jabuka was very difficult, but exposure to dangers could be well paid.
The gray falcon (Falco peregrinus), known for being the fastest animal in the world, still nests on Jabuka and attacks drones trying to capture beautiful images of the island. The Gray Falcon is an absolute world record holder with a speed that can reach more than 300 km / h, which makes it not only the fastest bird but also the fastest animal in the world.
If you already feel a magnetic attraction from this volcanic island, make your research, chose the boat, book a tour and risk falling in love with this magnetic “Apple” rock.
